Dear Illinois Handball Players,
I hope that everyone is doing well. We are going through uncharted waters with this pandemic and first and foremost, I wish that everyone is staying safe and healthy during this time. Obviously, handball has taken a back seat for most of us during this time. We have had to make sacrifices and changes throughout this time and I wanted to give everyone an update with where we are at as an organization, changes that we have made, and things that we are working on.
As a result of COVID-19 we have had to cancel several tournaments. We were scheduled to host the USHA National Masters Doubles in conjunction with the IHA State Doubles in April. At the time, we decided to postpone the event in the hopes of rescheduling it in the fall. Due to Illinois re-opening plans and not being able to have gatherings of more than 50 people, we have since decided to cancel the event all together. We are saddened to not have this event and out state doubles for the last two years. As I am continuing talks with USHA, it sounds like we will have another opportunity to host the Maters Doubles in 2021 if all goes well. Stay tuned for more information.
For the same reasons mentioned above, we have decided to cancel the summer 3-wall events normally hosted at Lagrange Park and Rainbow Beach. I know that players have been out there playing when and where they can, but we cannot put on the great event we have in the past with everything that is going on. We will see how things progress in the coming weeks and months. We have talked about possibly putting an event together for a quick 1 or 2 day tournament but that all depends on the progress made and how Illinois reopens.
I am sure most of you have heard the sad news of several of the local YMCA’s closing including Lattof YMCA, Leaning Tower YMCA and a couple others. These facilities have been the home to many players over the years and have hosted several tournaments and leagues. With that being said, we have been looking for new places to play. We have been in talks with Schaumburg Tennis Plus (hopefully new home for IHA state tournaments) and they have given us a discounted rate on membership. We will also have league play at this facility. They have 6 great courts, a nice facility, a bar, and more. If you would like additional information or have questions about membership, please email firstname.lastname@example.org and I will be happy to respond.
In regards to the National 3-wall tournament in Maumee, OH. As far as I know, they still plan on having the event. They want to get a feel for how many people are going to attend. I also wanted to mention that there have been several players playing 1-wall at River Trails Park in Mt. Prospect for those of you who live further north.
Again, I want to wish everyone the best and hope to see everyone real soon.
