Rainbow Tournament August 2012

Dane Szatkowski continued his 3 wall dominance in Chicago this summer with a convincing win over Marco Lemus in the Open Singles, 21-2 and 21-15. Mike Dorneker Jr. continues to make strides into the upper tier of Chicago Open players with his first semi-final appearance, losing to Dane 8, 5. Bill Mehilos rounded out the final four semi-finalists, losing to Lemus 4,10 in the other semi final.

In the A/B singles Dan Sterrett played steady ball all weekend and defeated Meg Mehilos in the finals, 13 and 9. Sterrett almost didn’t make the finals but found a way to nip Dan Valera 11-10 tiebreaker in their opening round match. Rounding out the semi finals were Carlos Zamora and Bob Venus. Zamora was coming off an impressive beach win earlier in July when he captured the B doubles with Scott Szatkowski. Mehilos defeated Zamora 17,12; Sterrett defeated Venus 8, 9.

The 40+ Singles was looking like it would have an interesting finals until Bret Williams had to give in to back spasms. Dave Dohman outlasted Kevin Hill in a late Saturday match, winning 13, 10. Bret Williams was fighting back spasms in his first round match with Phil Hammond but appeared to get his problems under control when he beat Greg Kolerich in their semi-final match, 7,18. However, Sunday morning was not kind to the Detroit area slugger as he had to forfeit his final match to Dohman.

The 90+ Doubles was by far the largest and most competitive draw with multiple upsets throughout play. In quarter-final action: Stas Hammond/Jim Devito edge Tim Sterrett/Kevin Greco, 20 and 10. Jamie Simon/Scott Rosenthal nipped Dane Szatkowski/Joe Flores Sr.11-10 tiebreaker. Jake Komsthoeft/Dave Dohman defeated Carlos Zamora/Scott Szatkowski 15,10 while Shane and Sean Conneely rounded out quarter final action with a win over Kevin Hill/Marty Clemens, 11 and 17.

Both finalists advanced to the title game but not without a fight in the semi’s. Jake/Double D narrowly won their first game against Stas/Jimmy D, 21-18. The second game was a complete reversal with Jake/Dave winning 21-3. The Irish father/son Conneely duo always like to play [and win] tiebreakers and held on to defeat Jamie/Scott 12, [14], 7 in a match that lasted over two hours. In the finals, the two LFC grads completed their first time partnership with a victory over Shane/Sean 17, 7.

Rounding out the tourney results, the 55+ doubles saw last year’s winners repeat in convincing fashion. Bill Moritz/Rick Whittington bested Jim Vail/Kevin Jarvis in one semi final, 2 and 13. Lou Jarvis/Mario Schembari held off Tom Allen/Bob Anderson in the other semi, winning a competitive match 17,16. In the finals, Bill and Rick worked methodically throughout the match, winning with almost identical game results of 21-15, 21-14.

Good weather prevailed throughout the tourney and with Lake Michigan water temps hovering in the mid 80’s, players and spectators were able to continually cool off and enjoy the refreshing lake water.
