The great weather in Chicago of 2007 held up for the annual 3-wall doubles tournament at Rainbow Beach. We think this is the 48th consecutive year for a tournament the last weekend of July, a tradition we hope continues forever.
In the “Open” bracket, the powerhouse brother team of Dane and Adam Szatkowski overcame Mike Munson-Jake Komsthoeft 21-17, 21-8 in the finals. Many very long rallies highlighted this match, as both teams play excellent 3-wall doubles, rarely giving the opponent a ball to “shoot”. In the semis, Sazatkowskis defeated Kevin Greco and Adam Weirner and Munson/Komsthoeft defeated Shane Conneely and Paul Brady.
In the 50’s doubles, another brother team, Dave & Larry Dohman ran roughshod over the excellent 3-wall team of Sean Conneelly-Scott Rosenthal. Larry Dohman started on fire in game one, with multiple aces or weak returns, leading to an 11-0 initial lead. The Dohman’s never looked back, winning 21-6, 21-10.
In the “B’s” the Rainbow regulars of Jim Quattrocci-Mario Villa were up one game, and winning the 2nd, when a ball hit the eyeguard of Villa, causing an injury default to the very athletic team of John Krieyer-Mike Anderson. Krieyer-Anderson had a great tournament, and congratulations to them. We hope to see them often at Rainbow.
The injury is a reminder to all how critical it is to make sure eyeguards are worn, and worn properly.
The newly refurbished lighting greatly enhanced the Friday night play, and all were reminded why 3-wall Handball remains a compelling hobby
