IHA State Singles 2004

After a September loss in the finals of the Vermont Open to older brother Mike, David Munson has been on a tear ever since. It started in November with a championship victory in the Toledo Open, followed by another Open win in December at the Milwaukee Classic and now has added to his laurels the top prize at this year's IHA Open. Seeded 3 rd , Munson had his work cut out for him in the Quarters against a rapidly improving Jason Keasling, winning in two tough games 21-18, 21-16.

In the semis he was matched up against Bill Mehilos, a recent pro qualifier. It was a topsy turvy kind of affair as he lost the first game 7-21, but bounced back in strong fashion taking the second 21-5. In the tie breaker it was nip and tuck up to 4 all, and Munson pulled away for a convincing 11-4 win.

In the upper bracket, #1 seed, Jake Komsthoeft ran into a hot shooting Jamie Simon and lost in an exciting semifinal tie breaker 18-21, 21-19, 11-9. As the scores indicate, it was anyone's game, but Simon showed great poise under pressure and emerged the victor setting the stage for the showdown with Munson.

The championship was played a half hour after Simon's semi-final match, the result of an arrangement agreed upon by himself and Komsthoeft. A much fresher Munson cruised to a 21-9 win in the first game, but then a rejuvenated Simon came back for a 21-19 win in the second. The tie breaker was hotly contested in the early innings, but Munson took the crown as the state's best in 2004 with an 11-4 win.

The A finals was an all Lake Forest College contest with Ivan Ruiz gaining the upper hand over teammate Tyler Stevens 21-11, 13-21, 11-4. In the B finals, young Suhn Lee, a Don Quinlan protégé, continued to show his improving skills taking the measure of Chicago fireman, Sid Blustein 20-21, 21-2, 11-2. And in the C finals another young promising Chicago area player, Mike Perkins bested Chicago school teacher, Art Gray 2-21, 21-14, 11-7.
