Women’s State Singles
Nov. 16-17, 2007 -- As everyone is well aware, handball has many levels of ability. Here in Illinois the women play at all the standard divisions of skill but with one major difference, there is the Megan Mehilos level and then all the other levels descend from there.
Over the last six years the competition among the IHA women continues to improve but never seems to narrow the distance between themselves and Megan. Once again she dominated the field making it look easy as no one scored more than seven points in any game. For the second year in a row her finals opponent was Lake Forest sophomore, Aimee Ulbert, who played very well, but to no avail losing 21-7, 21-5. The Queen reigns again, long live the Queen!
Emily Zender, another LFC sophomore, was a player who showed considerable improvement over the past year. After losing in the Open semi’s to team mate Aimee Ulbert she came back to take third place over Robin Sterrett 21-16, 21-19. Tanya Szatkowski won the A division 21-15, (14), 11-4 against Lisa Jeziorny with Kim Braden taking third place. Terry Mehilos won the B’s over Niahm Kristufec, 21-9, 21-19 and Hannah Michal took third. In the C’s Hayley Roberts won over Jacyln Selestow 21-10, 21-7, and Sarah Brusig finished third.
A majority of the participants plan to enter the January 2008 Women’s Classic in Long Island, NY. It will be an interesting showcase to see how the women of Illinois fare against the rest of the country.
