We are a group of local handball players teaching beginner handball classes at Gordon Park in partnership with the Park District of LaGrange.
What is Handball?
The Oldest Game Played with a Ball.
Handball is a game between 2, 3, or 4 players where a ball is struck with either hand against a wall, and alternating players/pairs are required to make contact with the ball prior to a second bounce. This is not the Olympic game of team handball. It is similar to racquetball, though substantially more difficult and strenuous. Handball is played on a court with either 1, 3, or 4 walls, and with a variety of balls. Each version of the game is similar in that the ball must hit the front wall in the air once it is struck by a player's hand.
A Pro-Level Example of our Game
Handball is a game you can play for a lifetime, doesn't require much equipment, and is played at all skill and age levels. Handball players are a diverse group who share a passion for what we consider the “perfect game.” It is one of the best overall workouts for the body, and requires the development of dexterity on both sides of the body. Unlike racquetball or tennis, there is no backhand – players strike the ball with their dominant hand as well as their non-dominant hand! Handball is great for cross-training for other sports. Developing skills with the non-dominant hand, foot work and hand-eye coordination. Our class is played on the 3-wall courts at Gordon Park. Our group is made up of mixed ages, genders and handball experience. ALL ARE WELCOME!

Our class is held Mondays and Fridays from 4pm to 5:30pm. This class is for those who have never played handball before or who have very limited experience with the sport. It’s ideal for teenagers and active adults. We will focus on the basics such as how to hit the ball, serving, and court positioning. All equipment will be provided.
We are offering 2 classes a week but it’s fine if you can only play one day a week. Like most sports, you will learn the game more quickly and improve if you can play 2-3 times a week. The courts are available for open play throughout the week.
Get a buddy to join you for the class. Having a practice partner you can play with during non-class hours is the best way to learn and have fun with the game.
